Gamma Knife History. Swedish neurosurgeon Dr. Lars Leksell and a colleague, Börje Larsson, developed the first Gamma Knife model in 1968 during their search for a non-invasive modality to treat functional brain disorders. Subsequently, the Gamma Knife was proven to be beneficial in treating brain tumors and arteriovenous abnormalities.

Today, Professor Leksell’s vision of non-invasive neurosurgery has become the gold standard with Leksell Gamma Knife. Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ is preferred for its extreme accuracy, efficiency and outstanding therapeutic response. Today, cranial radiosurgery with Perfexion is performed in hundreds of leading hospitals and clinics around the world. Perfexion is a fully integrated system and complete solution. Conditions & treatments “Radiosurgery” is a term coined by Lars Leksell, MD, the pioneering developer of the Gamma Knife.

In the 1950s, Swedish professors Borje Larsson of the Gustaf Werner Institute, University of Uppsala, and Lars Leksell at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, began to investigate combining proton beams with stereotactic (guiding) devices capable of pinpointing targets within the brain.

Lars Leksell – creator of Elekta’s Leksell Gamma Knife® – sat down recently with his friend and colleague, Dheerendra Prasad, MD. Dr. Leksell and Dr. Prasad, a renowned Gamma Knife radiosurgery veteran, discussed their friendship and shared passion for the intracranial treatment technology that has changed almost 1.2 million lives since 1991.

Gamma Knife radiosurgery at the University of Virginia offers patients a tremendous chance for successful results. Since 1989, the Lars Leksell Center for Gamma Surgery at UVA has treated more than 10,000 patients from 54 countries and every state in the United States.

The Leksell Gamma Knife Society is proud to announce the introduction of the new Peer-to-Peer chat feature. This new addition has been made exclusively available to all Society members to further facilitate collaboration and participation in the worldwide medical community of Gamma Knife practitioners. The first prototype of the gamma knife was installed in Sophiahemmet in 1968. Over the rest of his career, Leksell treated 762 patients with it.
